eat and what to do when traveling in style:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">On our trip along the Californian Coast from north to south my husband and I left northern California (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2017\/11\/a-california-road-trip-along-coast.html\">Mendocino<\/a>, San Francisco\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2017\/11\/a-california-road-trip-along-coast_29.html\">hotels<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2017\/12\/a-california-road-trip-along-coast.html\">restaurants<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2018\/01\/a-california-road-trip-along-coast.html\">activities<\/a>) behind us and reached Cambria, a picturesque village in Central California, situated midway between San Francisco &amp; Los Angeles along California\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">State Route 1 (Highway 1).<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; This is a 150 kilometers (150 miles) long stretch of coast between Carmel-by-the-Sea in the north and Hearst Castle in the south. This magical area of California\u2019s Central Coast, \u201cthe greatest meeting of land and water in the world\u201d according to Francis Mc Comas, a watercolorist, is truly worth visiting. Unfortunately, it is not fully passable until well into 2018 due to a bridge collapse as well as rock and mud slides. Therefore, check out in advance which portions of Big Sur\u2019s coastline are interrupted when planning to travel the area.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-6F2j_kMTZSk\/Wl3mfGLG2VI\/AAAAAAAADug\/nwxFypQTaIYg4rhdrhqTXSe7yfMXw1DQgCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e95.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-6F2j_kMTZSk\/Wl3mfGLG2VI\/AAAAAAAADug\/nwxFypQTaIYg4rhdrhqTXSe7yfMXw1DQgCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e95.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1067\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cambria_features\"><\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">Cambria features<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">Cambria is located just a few minutes\u2019 drive south of Hearst Castle, one of the sights I will come back to in a moment. The village, which is considered \u201cone of America\u2019s prettiest town\u201d by Forbes, is surrounded by Monterey pines. It is one of only three places where you can find such native forests. Furthermore, there are rocky cliffs and beaches. The sea is home to various species such as seals and sea otters. There are tide pools filled with sea anemones, sea urchins, crabs and other sea creatures. There is also the chance to view migrating whales. For our second visit to this quaint town \u2013 the first one goes back many years -, we had difficulties in finding suitable lodging.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">One of the best possibilities to spend the night in Cambria is probably either Blue Dolphin Inn or San Pebbles Inn,<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-3eacNQTRyhc\/Wl3mpUuJz2I\/AAAAAAAADug\/ibdCRjJO7pMw4vXhx_mBCpUtMzeulKp9QCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e9b.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-3eacNQTRyhc\/Wl3mpUuJz2I\/AAAAAAAADug\/ibdCRjJO7pMw4vXhx_mBCpUtMzeulKp9QCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e9b.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1067\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">both belonging to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cambriainns.com\/\">Cambria Inns Collections<\/a>\u00a0and located directly on the stunning Moonstone Beach. We went for the latter as their Double Queen Full Oceanview Room met our needs best. The room had been recently updated and was solid although unexceptional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-NVRe97HezDQ\/Wl3qMmjbIlI\/AAAAAAAADuo\/YRPUwPd7OysBBqH4kZg1vSJQUu1fAeSzwCLcBGAs\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e7e.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-NVRe97HezDQ\/Wl3qMmjbIlI\/AAAAAAAADuo\/YRPUwPd7OysBBqH4kZg1vSJQUu1fAeSzwCLcBGAs\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e7e.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1067\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">We felt comfortable but it was far from being an upscale accommodation. If you seek real high end lodging, then there are two establishments in the Big Sur Area but \u2013 frankly speaking \u2013 I do not consider them as places offering value for money and therefore I cannot recommend them without reservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_eat\"><\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\"><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\"><strong>Where to eat<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">When we visited Cambria for the first time many years ago, we had dinner at a place called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seachestrestaurant.com\/\">Sea Chest Oyster Bar<\/a>\u00a0featuring excellent sea food dishes in a casual setting. And image the restaurant is still in the higher ranks at TripAdvisor! We did not go there this time as the eatery does not take reservations and it is known for its long lines.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-AoZnVOtc1zI\/Wl3mkFpF9QI\/AAAAAAAADug\/MV9fdy7LThoOb_r4n0OjLWt-IjJsJL-jwCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e99.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-AoZnVOtc1zI\/Wl3mkFpF9QI\/AAAAAAAADug\/MV9fdy7LThoOb_r4n0OjLWt-IjJsJL-jwCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e99.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1067\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">Instead of revisiting an \u201cold time favorite\u201d we opted for\u00a0<a>Madeline\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Restaurant and were very satisfied with our choice. The dining-spot features upscale American-French food in an elegant, intimate atmosphere. The food, regionally and seasonably sourced, is carefully prepared and arranged. Service is knowledgeable and smooth, prices are adequate, for me it is the absolute number one in town when it comes to fine dining.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-1XKYTKCxCjc\/Wl3qVKW1HAI\/AAAAAAAADus\/ZfnwyBtfbiQvKPkzZVhCcPXd1lUqWlgKQCLcBGAs\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e83.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-1XKYTKCxCjc\/Wl3qVKW1HAI\/AAAAAAAADus\/ZfnwyBtfbiQvKPkzZVhCcPXd1lUqWlgKQCLcBGAs\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e83.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1067\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">The restaurant of our choice for the second evening was<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackcatbistro.com\/\">\u00a0Black Cat Bistro<\/a>\u00a0offering well-made American food influenced from various European countries. While I liked the somewhat eclectic approach, not every dish was equally convincing. Service is attentive and friendly, prices are okay and the ambiance is pleasant yet unpretentious.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-JYWLPE8t62A\/Wl3mtsjTbZI\/AAAAAAAADug\/710tcgNT3sI0qEi4qew9VZagN-6kuhbcQCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1ea2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-JYWLPE8t62A\/Wl3mtsjTbZI\/AAAAAAAADug\/710tcgNT3sI0qEi4qew9VZagN-6kuhbcQCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1ea2.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1067\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do\"><\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">What to do<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">There are quite a lot of things to do in the quirky town of Cambria, and there are also several walking possibilities, what is highly appreciated by my husband and me.<\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">The most obvious activity when staying at a hotel on the beautiful Moonstone Beach as we did, is it to take a stroll along the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/visitcambriaca.com\/itinerary-element\/moonstone-beach-boardwalk\/\">Moonstone Beach Boardwalk<\/a>.<b>\u00a0<\/b>This amazing walkway is 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) long with several beach access points and benches to give the opportunity of observing the sea life and combing the beach. This is really a great thing to do on this rugged windswept coast.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-2wnP0xjysbA\/Wl3mkPZZ_JI\/AAAAAAAADug\/LpJ2OuyGCZYGfQa3AeA-FQDV3vrDp33ygCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e98.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-2wnP0xjysbA\/Wl3mkPZZ_JI\/AAAAAAAADug\/LpJ2OuyGCZYGfQa3AeA-FQDV3vrDp33ygCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e98.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1067\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">Other great trails can be found in the nearby\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ffrpcambria.org\/\">Fiscalini Ranch Preserve<\/a>. This 175-hectare (430-acre) park \u2013 belonging to the American Land Conservancy \u2013 protects over a mile of spectacular Pacific Ocean coastline. The bluff trail\u00a0is easy to walk and offers fantastic vistas of the coastal scenery. Other trails lead uphill to pine and oak forests.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-oaDKCBIPSrE\/Wl3mVKNQFuI\/AAAAAAAADug\/0rhkgk3ZfecbWJrGM5OFHtTfvJfRxEN5wCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e8a.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-oaDKCBIPSrE\/Wl3mVKNQFuI\/AAAAAAAADug\/0rhkgk3ZfecbWJrGM5OFHtTfvJfRxEN5wCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_1e8a.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1067\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">When being in the area, a visit to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hearstcastle.org\/\">Hearst Castle<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">about six miles north of Cambria, has to be on everyone\u2019s agenda.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">\u00a0This immaculately curated mansion was the private residence of a publishing tycoon, William Randolph\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Hearst<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">. This extraordinary temple of opulence and excess was completed in 1947 and is nowadays one of California\u2019s most visited state parks. The estate consists of 165 rooms and 51 hectares (127 acres) of terraced gardens complete with fountains and pools.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">My visit to Hearst Castle dates back to my first stay here many years ago so I do not have current information on how to visit the place.
